Meeting Notes: Wednesday, September 28, 2005

Father conducted an opening prayer service using a St. Therese Novena Rose Prayer and readings from both St.  Peter and the Gospel according to Matthew.

Introductions were done around the table (see contact sheet)

Aaron discussed the goals listed on the back of the handout.  Goals will be changed as needed as we continue.

Father discussed the requirements of a person on the task force and also discussed the following sequence of events:

bullet

Oct 27th - priests will meet with the bishop and receive a packet explaining the evaluation process.

bullet

Fall 2006 - evaluation should be complete

bullet

Winter 2007 - plans will be implemented

bullet

August - September 2007 - plans mostly completed

Heather will write the minutes and they will be either emailed or picked up in the sacristy on Sunday.

Two activities were done to help the group get into the mind set of coming up with new ideas.  (Cow picture and triangles)

The following problems our church faces were found:

bullet

people leaving the faith

bullet

low church attendance

bullet

lots of churches in the area that aren’t filled (less churches may result in people seeing them as more valuable)

bullet

3,000 college students who say the are Catholic but do not attend mass

bullet

we need to show vibrance in our parish for the Bishop’s report

bullet

No diversity in families - not enough family participation (Not a large contingent of parents and children)

bullet

Two-thirds of our parish doesn’t come (stats show parish is young?)

bullet

summer masses are larger

bullet

1,700 people in parish only one quarter attend majority regulars

bullet

790 families belong but 400-500 people attend mass

bullet

Church is not as much of a social option(setting) anymore

bullet

People stop coming as families grow

bullet

kids make decision

bullet

kid problems (crying)

bullet

mixed marriages

bullet

too many distractions

bullet

Large number of divorced people - not able to receive sacraments

bullet

sacraments - people want what they want

bullet

it’s not easy to go once you’ve stopped (becomes a habit)

bullet

people perceive the Catholic Church as wealthy - they don’t need $

bullet

Only one priest - if they can’t relate to him they leave

bullet

Why are we Catholic? - fear, faith, Eucharist

bullet

nothing used to happen on Sunday (stores, practice, parents work, mall)

bullet

Teens - “nothing relates to me”

bullet

Bulletin is to small

bullet

three separate entrances and exists, separates people, lacking physical facilities

bullet

young kids don’t go to church because parents don’t go

bullet

fear among priests that we won’t find help form the people when parishes change/close

bullet

groups must last through change and work with new pastor

bullet

poor communication among parishes - too divided

The following were some ideas to help solve the problem:

bullet

crying room

bullet

radio broadcast is growing - Protestants and Catholics (listen and then drawn to church)

bullet

survey - “What is your expectation of church”

bullet

Sunday evening mass (music and homily relate to kids, food) (last ditch mass, shortage of priests)

bullet

probably can’t alternate priests

bullet

probably drop a mass and to go to Sunday night

bullet

alternate Sunday mass 11 and 7

bullet

Newman Center is for college students

bullet

survey who would come to a night mass

bullet

Other church functions should be posted in Bulletin (calendar)

bullet

limit entrances/exits

bullet

one CYO for the city

bullet

more collaboration between churches

bullet

moving towards St. Joe’s w/penance and confirmation

bullet

25% of parish is from Fredonia

bullet

Put personal spiritual stories in bulletin

bullet

Baccalaureate mass for all parishes or ask to be invited to others
