Holy Trinity Task Force Minutes

Friday, November 18, 2005

Opening Prayer – Father David

Rick Donovan & Aaron Pietro attended meeting for lay people about the restructuring process

·  Holy Trinity should have a plan by the end of Feb. and give this to the Vicariate

·  Information from packet needs to be distributed to the parishioners

Town hall meeting, bulletin announcements, put Task Force names on flyers so that people have someone to call

·  Dec 2 – prayer service for restructuring with Benediction

·  Each parish should have access to their own information (financial, etc)

·  Write in bulletin the cost of money coming in and going out

·  There is no pre-designed plan of which parishes will close.  We do have to plan

within the bishop’s guidelines, but the bishop is looking for input and is trying to

meet each parish’s needs.

·  Pg. 26 – Yes/No questions to help develop plan – Answering a lot of no’s doesn’t mean the parish is going to close

·  Vicariate meeting opening statement – we need to look at what will be good for the whole diocese, not just for individual parishes

·  Empty churches – buildings will not be left empty, they will be knocked down if necessary

Flyer/Bulletin

·  Pg. 8 (entire page)

·  Pg. 20 Map of (entire page) – include average number of parishioners per priest, include chart from pg. 21 on map

·  Rick Donovan – to make a more detailed map including # of parishioners attending, Task Force and Parish Council will have a large version, print out smaller version for parishioners

·  Parish Financial Analysis – Chautauqua – North Vicariate

·  Parishes and Missions in the Northern Chautauqua Vicariate – make headings more understandable

·  Aaron Pietro to make first flyer for next Sunday

·  Include a flyer in Christmas bulletin

·  Keep extra flyers at doorways for people who didn’t get the insert the week before

·  Pg. 24 & 25 – Criteria For a Vibrant Parish

Mission Statement, Vision, & Values (packet)

Pg. 5 - Diocesan Mission Statement

·  Eucharist centered – work on keeping the celebration of Christ at the forefront

·  help people to witness the faith

·  be a community that reaches outward

Pg. 5 – Diocesan Vision Statement

            ·  be a welcoming community and invite people to come back

            ·  the diocese will ‘read the signs of the times’ – is open to change, but we stay

faithful to the Mother Church in Rome

            ·  it’s not just the priests job to minister to the people, it’s all of our responsibility

            ·  Pg. 17 - Compare drop in civic population and Catholic population and the

percentages don’t match up

            ·  are we welcoming to divorced people – we are, but it’s a difficult situation

            ·  we have not ministered well to the Spanish/Black community

            Pg. 6 – Core Values

            ·  prayer, worship, Eucharist – we need to be able to minister to people

            ·  the church is a universal church – what’s best for the whole church, not just

Holy Trinity

·  we should respect others’ heritage, traditions, cultures

·  use our time, talent, and treasures to benefit all

Building people’s spirituality is crucial so when changes are made, they are not lost.

We need to make sure people know their input is important and valued.

We need to learn from the mistakes from the past.

People need to make themselves involved by volunteering and meeting the priest so they feel welcome and part of the church.

Pg. 9 – The Process

Holy Trinity Task Force is farther ahead of other parishes in terms of planning

Pg 12 – Reflection – The Church Likened to an Inn of Hospitality

What is your experience when you are a visitor in another congregation?

·  People ask what parish you are from

·  If it is a church attended frequently, people are welcoming.

·  If it is a church not attended frequently, there is not much discussion with others

·  Some groups are very welcoming

·  People stop and talk to you, welcome you

·  Some people stay and talk after church, others leave quickly

What steps might be taken by your parish to become a more consistent and faithful community of hospitality?

   ·  greeters

            ·  lectors to be more welcoming – not just read what’s in front of them

            ·  coffee, breakfasts, fellowship after mass – put a tent outside in warm weather

            ·  put signs around doors

            ·  canopy over doors

            ·  ushers more visible as ushers

In the restructuring of our parishes, are you willing to be both guest and host, not matter what church site serves as the “Inn”?

             ·  Yes, but we don’t want to be the only ones willing to change

            ·  Church is where Christ is, not where Holy Trinity is

            ·  We need to be church centered

            ·  We need to begin inviting other parishes to Holy Trinity, or we need to start

becoming part of another parish depending upon what will happen

·  People are going to look for a priest that they can relate to

Statistical Report of All Members of the Parish

             ·  Information from survey 2 years ago

            ·  Copies will be made

 Family Report of the Parish

             ·  Copies will be made

A consensus must be made in by the Task Force, not a majority vote

 Closing Prayer - Father David
